In 1979 the first St. Phillips Bakery opened its doors to business on Jane
Street south of Wilson Avenue in Downsview. Joseph Bozzo’s dream was
to build a successful business in his new country.
It wasn’t
long before his son Robert, who shared his father’s
passion, joined him. In the early years, producing
25 special order cakes per week was considered
a great accomplishment. Before long customers began
taking notice of their talent for decorating specialty
cakes. At the same time their baked goods began
gaining notoriety. As their product base expanded
so did their customers.
Robert’s ambition
convinced him that the business could expand and
be successful. In 1989 a second St. Phillips Bakery
opened its doors in the outer reaches of the expanding
Toronto Metropolis. It wasn’t long before
their reputation carried to their new store on
Major Mackenzie Drive in Maple. From a modest 25
cakes they were bursting at the seams producing
over 800 cakes per week.
As their fame grew
across Toronto so did the many requests to expand.
Robert Bozzo and family withstood the demands for
many years. Finally Robert decided that he would
consider the possibility only if he could create
something special. With the help of talented designers
and architects his vision was soon realized. In
May of 2001, a third magnificent location greeted
its customers. Their new Woodbridge location easily
surpassed all expectations. The award winning design
became an overwhelming success.
Today, St. Phillips’ tradition
of decorating mastery has become a Toronto institution.
The original store is no longer part of the chain
but the customer base has continued to expand.
The expansion requests continue. Robert only smiles
and says, “Only if I can create something
special”.
